Hitachi Metals Group to Exhibit Advanced Product Lineup at
Automotive Engineering Exposition 2011

Tokyo, Japan, May 12, 2011—Hitachi Metals, Ltd. has today announced that the Hitachi Metals Group will be a key exhibitor at the Automotive Engineering Exposition 2011, an automobile technology exhibition scheduled to run from May 18, 2011. The Group will present a product lineup that addresses the themes of lighter vehicle bodies, higher-performance electrical components, and enhanced fuel economy and intends to mobilize its high technical development capacity to address the increasingly diversified needs of electric vehicles, hybrid electric vehicles, next-generation internal-combustion cars, and other products in raising the level of environmental performance in motor vehicles.

1. Major Products to Be Exhibited

(1) Lighter Vehicle Bodies

a. Mold Steel

• Plastic Mold Steel

  • HPM-MAGIC(TM)
    HPM-MAGIC™

This type of steel is designed to be used in dies for a wide range of plastic products. HPM-MAGIC™ is a product characterized by a highly sophisticated balance of specularity, hardness, toughness, and cost and excels as a general-purpose plastic mold material adopted in the manufacturing of resin products spanning a wide range of fields.

• Cold Work Tool Steel

  • SLD-MAGIC(TM)
    SLD-MAGIC™

This steel is primarily used in making cold press dies for metal parts in products that vary from precision components to automobile bodies. SLD-MAGIC™ is a cold-working-use mold steel developed in the pursuit of higher productivity and lower cost. The use of this steel is instrumental in greatly raising the service life of dies and the ease with which they are produced.

• Hot Work Tool Steel

  • DAC-MAGIC(TM)
    DAC-MAGIC™

This steel is used in making molds for transmission cases, cylinder blocks, and other automobile castings; dies for the extrusion molding of aluminum window frames; die-casting molds; and other products. The development of such steel was advanced to create DAC-MAGIC™, which resists cracking when utilized in the environment it was designed for, i.e., one characterized by fierce temperature changes. To meet industry demands for the short-cycle manufacture of large advanced-design die-cast products, the high-temperature strength of this steel has been enhanced. Also, the product excels in machinability and resisting stress corrosion cracking.

b. Aluminum Wheels

  • SCUBA(TM)
    SCUBA™

High-precision computer-aided engineering technologies are employed to form SCUBA® aluminum wheels. The result is superb strength and rigidity along with a lighter weight (15% less than those of previous products), leading to impressive contributions to higher fuel economy and lower carbon dioxide emissions. The advanced aluminum casting technology perfected at Hitachi Metals enables the creation of chic, delicately designed wheels to which LUSTERIC™—a high-quality coating—and other superior-grade surface trea™ents can be applied.

c. High-Toughness Ductile Iron Castings

  • NMS(TM)
    NMS™

NMS™ castings, engineered for outstanding low-temperature toughness and precision dimensions, play a key role in raising the quality of suspension, differential gears, knuckle components, and other automotive parts. These castings can be delivered to customers in a near-net-shape state and contribute to the production of thin-walled automobile components that are lighter.

(2) Higher-Performance Electrical Components

a. Neodymium Magnets

  • NEOMAX(TM)
    NEOMAX™

The NEOMAX® series of high-performance Nd-Fe-B sintered magnets is a major factor in boosting the efficiency of wind power generators and reducing their size. In this genre of magnets, Hitachi Metals leads the industry on the strength of the company’s high-performance technology, which is renowned for its stable quality and minimal use of rare elements (DDMagic™ Dy vapor deposition and diffusion technology); surface trea™ent technology that excels in various uses; and on other fronts.

b. Ferrite Magnets

  • NMF(TM)
    NMF™

The NMF™ series of ferrite magnets is produced using primarily iron oxide and delivers outstanding cost performance. This series manifests the highest magnetic properties of any ferrite magnet in the world. Designed for exceptional thermal stability, these magnets are widely used in motor applications.

c. Cut Cores for Power Chokes

  • Cut cores
    Cut cores

These roll cores are made from metal sheets formed by rapidly cooling molten metal consisting primarily of iron (with silicon and boron added) at approximately 1 millionC/second. Because this rapid solidification process prevents a crystal structure from forming inside, the cores offer unprecedented magnetic properties. They are utilized as core materials in products ranging from high-voltage batteries to low-voltage drive motors and DC-DC converters in electronic components and make a solid contribution to improving power conversion efficiency.

d. Electrode-Connecting Cladding Materials

  • Cladding materials
    Cladding materials

These cladding materials are engineered to handle connections of materials with different properties (e.g., aluminum and copper) in cathodes and anodes. They firmly contribute to streamlining the cell module assembly process and enhancing reliability. The materials and structures to be combined are rationally designed and custom-made to meet the needs of specific uses and connecting methods. Other options include finished products, such as press-forged terminal components, connecting-use bus bars (cylindrical components), and lead components.

(3)Enhanced Fuel Economy

a. CVT Belt Materials

  • CVT belt materials
    CVT belt materials

These metal belt materials developed by Hitachi Metals for use in continuous variable transmissions (CVT) have excellent fatigue endurance. With the use of melting and cold rolling technologies to control nonmetallic inclusions, which can cause breakage and other damage, these materials are a major force in elevating transmission performance and reliability.

b. HERCUNITE® S Series of Heat-Resistant Cast Components

  • HERCUNITE(TM)S Series
    HERCUNITE™
    S Series

HERCUNITE® is a series of heat-resistant cast-iron and cast-steel materials designed for use in the manufacturing of turbine housings, exhaust manifolds, and other vital exhaust system components. This extensive product lineup is headed up by the HERCUNITE™ S Series, which can be used in temperatures of up to around 1,050°C. Applications of these castings continue to expand against the backdrop of a shift to turbocharged engines—a trend accompanying the downsizing of engines in the quest for greater eco-friendly performance.

c. Diesel Particulate filter

  • Diesel Particulate filter
    Diesel Particulate filter

These filters are structured to remove particulate matter from the exhaust emissions of diesel engines used to power midsize to large commercial vehicles. Hitachi Metals has skillfully combined low pressure loss with a high collection rate for the removal of fine particulates ranging in size from 10 to 100 nanometers.
