Strengthening Heat-Treatment Operations for Tool Steel in Indonesia
—Expanding Sales to Customers in the ASEAN Region—Tokyo, Japan, February 17, 2004—Hitachi Metals, Ltd., announced today that it has installed a new heat-treatment furnace in its sales agency company in Indonesia as part of activities to further develop tool steel business operations in Southeast Asia and is working to strengthen its heat-treatment service capabilities for customers in the ASEAN region. Details are as follows.
1. Background
Along with expansion in local production of automobiles and motorcycles in the ASEAN region, demand for tool steel for production of metal molds is continuing to rise.As Hitachi Metals has proceeded with the aggressive expansion of its global activities, it has provided heat-treatment services for tool steel through sales agency P.T. Stilmetindo Prima, in Indonesia, which is located within the high-priority ASEAN region. However, since the capacity of existing heat-treatment facilities is inadequate to meet rapidly rising demand, Hitachi Metals has found it necessary to expand capacity.
Therefore, Hitachi Metals has provided financing of approximately ¥100 million to the previously mentioned Stilmetindo Prima for the purchase and installation of a state-of-the-art vacuum heat-treatment furnace. Beginning in February 2004, improved and expanded heat-treatment services will be offered to customers in the ASEAN region, including Astra Honda Motor.
