Hitachi Metals Develops World's Smallest Antenna Switch Module

Tokyo, Japan, June 6, 2001-Hitachi Metals, Ltd., is pleased to announce the development of an antenna switch module of size 5440 (mounting dimensions 5.4mm x 4.0mm), the first of its kind in the industry.

1. Background

In recent years, advances made in the mobile phone market have been remarkable, with numerous frequency systems being employed worldwide. The most widely used system is the European Standard system, GSM (Global System for Mobile Communication). Services for this system are being offered in the 900MHz and 1800MHz frequency bands, and cellular phones with dual band capability are being used in the countries using this system. Increasingly compact cellular phones require higher-performance parts that fit in a reduced mounting area.

2. Development Background

Hitachi Metals already mass-produces an antenna switch module of size 6750 (mounting dimensions 6.7mm x 5.0mm). This antenna switch module integrates a diplexer, two antenna switches, and two low-pass filters into a single module, enabling a drastic reduction in size.
Responding to demands for more compact antenna switch modules, we have drawn on our vast reserves of design know-how and devised a circuit pattern that achieves a higher level of integration. We have worked on the development of miniature antenna switch modules using low-temperature co-fired ceramics (LTCC) and fine thick-film printing technology that were developed in-house.
As a result, we have succeeded in creating a high-performance miniature antenna switch module of size 5440, realizing a 35% reduction in mounting area compared with current modules.
We applied the Land Grid Array (LGA) package type to reduce the mounting area and improved receiver-side insertion loss to raise the performance of the built-in antenna.

*Note: The LGA means that the pads of terminals are attached only on the underside of the component.

3. Features

(1) Small size: 5.4mm x 4.0mm x 1.8mm
