Hitachi Metals Develops High-Output GMR Sensor

Tokyo, Japan, April 5, 2001-Hitachi Metals, Ltd., announced today that it has developed a GMR membrane high-output GMR (giant magneto-resistive) sensor that is highly resistant to temperature variation.

1. Background

Hitachi Metals has been manufacturing AMR (anisotropic magneto-resistive) sensors for use with rotary encoders and linear encoders that read magnetic signals and detect rotational angle and positioning.
Compatible with a greater variety of environments than optical and other types of sensors, these magnetic sensors are widely used in the positioning of industrial machine tools and such OA equipment as printers.
In recent years, the market has come to demand the development of magnetic sensors that are compatible with the technical advancements, reductions in size, higher outputs, increased sensitivity, and higher resolution of today's leading edge equipment.
These advancements have necessitated the development of new elements because AMR sensors have a limited capacity to meet these demanding parameters. Hence, leveraging the ultrathin membrane, thin membrane laminating, and material design technologies accumulated through its experience in the field of magnetic head wafers, Hitachi Metals has succeeded in developing its own GMR elements, which are superbly resistant to temperature variations and highly environment-friendly. Using these elements, Hitachi Metals has brought to market highly stable, high-output GMR sensors.
In practice, these GMR sensors will enable compact and highly precise positioning and should find numerous uses in cameras, printers, and other compact and high definition devices.

2. Unique Features

(1) High output
  • Three times the output of Hitachi Metals' AMR sensors
