Hitachi Cable's Wireless IP Phone, "WirelessIP5000" adopted by NTT COMWARE

*Hitachi Cable has announced the end of sale for WirelessIP3000E and WirelessIP5000E-A.

Hitachi Cable, Ltd. announces that its wireless IP phone, "WirelessIP5000," has been adopted for the "Business Communication Solutions SS70V" (hereinafter referred to as "SS70V solutions") IP telephony system in the NEXIPT VoIP solution series of NTT COMWARE Corporation (Head Office: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Yuji Imai; hereinafter referred to as "NTT COMWARE"). Hitachi Cable will begin offering the WirelessIP5000 in combination with SS70V solutions beginning May 19.

Recently, many companies have introduced wireless LANs in order to create a so-called "layout-free office," a work environment in which desks do not belong to specific individuals, or to reduce the cost of wiring work when changing the layout of the office. In addition, IP phones based on VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) are rapidly increasing in popularity, and demand is increasing for wireless IP phones that can be used in a wireless LAN environment. At the same time, SIP (*1) is becoming the standard VoIP communication protocol. However, SIP implementation differs among server makers, which limits possible server-telephone terminal configurations.

Hitachi Cable has been offering the WirelessIP5000, since April 2004. WirelessIP5000 is an open-style wireless phone that can connect to the SIP servers of many manufacturers. In addition, it complies with the widely adopted IEEE802.11b wireless standard, enabling it to utilize existing wireless LAN facilities. It also offers advanced security functions in compliance with standards such as WEP (*2) and IEEE802.1x (*3), in order to prevent information leakage in the wireless LAN environment.

Based on these characteristics and its past record, our WirelessIP5000 has been adopted for NTT COMWARE's SS70V solutions. WirelessIP5000 is the first terminal specifically for wireless IP phones to be adopted for the SS70V solutions.

Hitachi Cable sell the WirelessIP5000 through our sales partners. Now that the WirelessIP5000 has been adopted by NTT COMWARE whose supply record sales of the SS70V solutions exceeds 53,000 lines since the beginning of 2002, we intend to further increase our share of the SIP-compliant wireless IP phone market.

*1 SIP (session initiation protocol) is a text-based application layer protocol for making settings for telephone calls. Due in part to its high degree of compatibility with Internet applications, it is widely used in VoIP devices and its use is rapidly growing in the market. It is now one of the standard protocols for VoIP.
*2 WEP is an encryption technique adopted in IEEE802.11b for security purposes. It uses a secret-key cryptosystem. The secret key may be 64 bit, 128 bit, or 256 bit, with the security level increasing along with the size of the secret key.
*3 IEEE802.1x is a standard established by the IEEE (Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, U.S.) for user authentication in a LAN. It is used primarily in wireless LAN environments such as IEEE 802.11b.
