First Domestically Manufactured Fast Ethernet Hub Goes on Sale

Hitachi Cable, Ltd. recently began commercial production and sales of a repeating hub that meets Fast Ethernet(R) specifications. The new hub has a transmission speed of 100 Mbps, which is 10 times faster than Ethernet(R), the world's most widely used LAN (local area network) standard. Shipments of the new device are scheduled to begin in March 1996.

Hitachi Cable is offering two models of its Fast Ethernet(R) repeating hub: the HCN-7150, which has a network management function, and the HCN-7550, which does not. Equipped with eight 100-Mbps ports, both models conform to the 100Base-TX standards advocated for Fast Ethernet(R) by the U.S. Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). Both models are reasonably priced: the HCN-7150 (with network management function) is 360,000 yen and the HCN-7550 (without network management function) is 260,000 yen.

A number of Fast Ethernet(R) switching* hubs are commercially available, but there are extremely few repeating hubs with a network management function. Hitachi Cable's HCN-7150 is the first hub of this type to be made in Japan. As demands for higher speed grew stronger, Hitachi Cable focused its attention on the superiority of 100Base-TX. In networks that are linked by existing category 5 twisted pair cable, 100Base-TX can be used to create a Fast Ethernet(R) network by exchanging terminal computer adapter cards and a hub. The Company developed its HCN-7330 switching hub and HIN-8200 multiprotocol router to conform to these standards. The market entry of Hitachi Cable's two repeating hubs have further strengthened the Company's lineup of Fast Ethernet(R) products. Hitachi Cable plans to meet the need for higher speed networks primarily through easy-to-use Fast Ethernet(R) hubs.

*Switching function: Where there are multiple network ports, switching refers to the ability to output data only through the ports where it is needed. By suppressing unnecessary network traffic, switching increases transmission efficiency.
