Hitachi Cable, Ltd. contributes to US-Japan cultural exchange with a home-stay program

On the occasion of the 40th anniversary of the day our company branched out of Hitachi, Ltd. to establish an affiliate corporation, we have planned to run a series of home-stay programs to invite high school students from areas where Hitachi Cable's affiliates operate. The present program which is the first of the series is scheduled during a period from Friday, July 18 to Saturday, July 26, 1997.

We have established 19 affiliated companies in the USA, China, Southeast Asia and Europe all of which are now well integrated into the respective societies as viable companies and it is becoming increasingly important for the respective districts and our affiliates to maintain a close relationship. It is also essential for us to introduce Japan and Japanese culture as one of the many cultures existing in the world to be able to assume a useful responsibility to make whatever contributions we can make for the benefit of the world, and also for those of us in Japan to have close contacts with the youngsters of other countries for the purpose of acquiring necessary knowledge and understanding of their countries. We are assured that such efforts will result in bringing our aim as represented by our corporate keyword "Globalization" into reality.

Our intention of implementing the home-stay program is to provide American high school students with an opportunity to experience the natural way of life, habits and customs of Japan by staying with employee families.

The high school students participating to the program have been selected on the basis of their school activities, performance, social activities as well as the contents of essays: "If I had opportunity to visit Japan" submitted by them. This is the first visit to Japan for all of them. They are a group of well motivated and aspiring students as apparent from their comments: "I want to discuss with Japanese students of my age differences in culture or politics between our countries and also on our future dreams", "I want to compare American and Japanese architectures and industries", or "I would like to talk and explain about American culture to Japanese people as if I am representing the USA."

We hope that the students can directly experience Japanese culture which is quite different from western cultures and that they will be further motivated on their return home to talk about their experience and findings with their family, friends, neighbors and others to share such knowledge and experiences so as to spread the ring of the cultural exchange.

We will review the home-stay program on the basis of the comments and opinions of the participants to reconsider the participating countries, duration, and contents so that we can make the program sustainable.

Our company aims to integrate ourselves into the local societies we are working in so as to be able to contribute the welfare and well-being of the local societies instead of indulging in business alone.
